Greater Fellowship

About Greater Fellowship

The Greater Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church had it’s beginning through a prayer band at the home of Bro. & Sis. Roosevelt Stevenson on January 17, 1971, on Glenview Avenue at 6:00 pm. This meeting was called by Sis Cleo Stevenson to sing, pray and fellowship together. After a “spirit filled” prayer meeting, it was the consent of all that the fellowship continued under the leadership of Rev. H.M. Smith. An offering of $100.00 was collected.

On January 24, 1971 Rev. H.M. Smith acquired the Cincinnati Bible College at 3800 Reading Road and organized us into a Fellowship Mission. The Lord heard the prayers of the members and solemnly answered by adding more members to the congregation. Pastor Smith also organized Sunday Morning Church School, Wednesday Night Prayer meeting, a Mass Choir, an Usher Board, a Missionary Society, a Nurses Guild, and a Banking Committee.

On March 24, 1971 The Greater Fellowship Missionary Church was organized under the direction of the late Rev. A.L. Goodwind, at the Jerriell Baptist Church, located at Court and Wesley Street. Rev. T.L. Lane, of New Prospect Baptist Church was moderator and Rev. J.H. Hill was the secretary. Rev. Lane gave the Church Covenant as requested by Rev. H.M. Smith. Rev. Morris Flemings gave some encouraging remarks.

Fifty –four members joined under Christian Experience. A motion was made by Sis Aurelia Smith to accept these members.

A motion was made by Sis Vanteen Coates, seconded by Sis. Lois Shanks that Rev H. M. Smith become Pastor of this church for an indefinite length of time. A motion was made by Sis. Georgetta Johnson, seconded by Sis Vanteen Coated, that if ever a time the Church and Pastor cannot agree and walk together in Christian love, the church will give a 90 day notice with pay. On the other hand, if the Pastor decided to leave the church, he must also give a 90 day notice to the church. An offering was taken up and the Right Hand of Fellowship was given, followed by the benediction and prayer by Pastor H.M. Smith.

We continued to worship at 3800 Reading Road until the Lord blessed us to raise enough money to purchase our present location in 1972. On May 20, 1973, the members marched to the new church located at 505 East Liberty Street.

On October 7, 1990 the Lord called our founder and beloved Pastor H. M. Smith from his labor to his reward. In October of 1990, Assistant Pastor H.E. Mabry was asked to serve as our Interim Pastor. During this period, a Pulpit Search Committee was elected and the church family went into prayer. The Lord answered many prayers of the church by calling Rev. H.E. Mabry to pastor in July of 1992.

Rev. Mabry served and worked diligently as Pastor until December 31, 2005. On New Years Eve of that year Rev. Mabry said his final prayer as pastor during the watch night service. January 1, 2006, Rev Mark T. Hawkins assumed the position of Interim Pastor of the Greater Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. Under the direction of Rev. Hawkins, the church began fasting and praying for a Shepard. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, on July 29, 2006, Rev Hawkins was called to Pastor the Greater Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Hawkins has since continued to preach and teach the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.
